Repurpose It earns a finalist place in the 34th National Banksia Sustainability Awards

We’re proud to announce Repurpose It has earned a place as a finalist in the 34th
National Banksia Sustainability Awards.
Our submission to the distinguished awards focused on our revolutionary wash plant.
The first of its kind in Australia, the wash plant is a key part of our mission to reduce
the vast amount of construction and demolition waste going to landfill.
Launched in March 2019, the state-of-the-art construction and demolition washing
plant facility is located within the 230 acre site in Epping, Victoria. The wash plant is
unique and ground-breaking as it’s the first of its kind in Australia that can recover
valuable resources from contaminated soils. This is achieved through a unique
process of washing and recycling what are usually difficult to recover materials,
involving advanced screening, scrubbing, and water treatment.
The recovered supplies include aggregates, sand, recycled water, soil, and
landscaping materials which are then turned into quality products for the
construction industry. Through the repurposing of these materials, we are preventing
valuable resources from going to landfill, and negating the need for extractive
materials.
Repurpose It co-founder and CEO, George Hatzimanolis, says the team is so proud
and honoured to be named a finalist in the awards.
“The team at Repurpose It has been working incredibly hard on supporting our
country’s transition to a circular economy and as pioneers of washing soils that
were otherwise destined for landfill we have demonstrated that the opportunity to
recover resources and give them new life is only just beginning as we change our
approach to what we consider waste. It’s an honour to have this work recognised in
the Banksia Sustainability Awards.”

The winners of the 34th National Banksia Sustainability Awards will be announced at
the Award Presentation on 23 March 2023 during a sit-down dinner event held in
Melbourne at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
